After several months of recovery 13 parrots were released under strict control by Corpocaldas. The activity was held on March 18 in the presence of 35 people including children, youth and adults who watched the liberation of 13 parrots that were in captivity and were reintroduced to the wild.

The main objective of the proposed release of Loras Cabeciamarilla (Amazona ochrocephala), is to release a group of parrots of this species, documenting aspects of their biology and ecology and to make an approach with communities through environmental education strategies multifaceted.


First results:

After several months in a recovery process, 13 parrots that had been subjected to captivity for several years, were released under strict control by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Caldas and the Foundation Corpocaldas ProAves, in the presence, attention and expectation of students and parents of the Educational Institution and Garrucha Havana, in the vicinity between the municipalities of Golden and Victoria, in the department of Caldas.

Parrots are commonly caught by humans to keep them as pets, subjecting them to captivity, deprived of the opportunity to interact with their natural habitat, which also contributes to declining populations, affecting the balance of ecosystems and in general humans.

After retrieving these individuals in captivity, they go through a long process of rehabilitation in appropriate places for this purpose, since after a long time interacting with the man, bring problems such as eating disorders, health, social and physical inter alia; after this process where they begin to acquire new skills to fly (by exercising the muscles for this purpose), recovery of plumage and achievement of food are brought back to its habitat.

After a recovery time (different for each individual) are released by adopting the following criteria: ability to fly, ability to achieve food and loss of imitating the human voice in the case of parrots.
