They plan to kill Canada geese to prevent accidents

MATAR_GANZOSIn the state of New York is about 250 thousand Canadian geese and the goal is not more than 85 000 copies. New York officials plan to kill 170 000 Canada geese, the same type of birds in January 2009 caused a dramatic landing on the Hudson River an Airbus A320 with 155 people aboard a flight after the aircraft collided with when they had just taken off. A document prepared by national, state and local spread in today's local news blog of the New York Times says that in the state of New York is about 250 thousand Canadian geese.

... And the goal is not more than 85 000 copies.

It is therefore proposed to eliminate "Euthanasia" two-thirds of the population of Canada geese in New York.

So far, authorities have already disposed of 400 of them who were in the popular Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York until two weeks ago were trapped and asphyxiated with carbon dioxide.

The idea is to put the geese captured alive in containers and bring them "a safe place where they would be euthanized by methods approved by the American Association of Veterinary Medicine" and then be buried, as described in the document.

That letter is the result of months of meetings between members of various public bodies, following the accident that killed a U.S. Airways aircraft when, shortly after takeoff, a flock of birds crossed his path and several geese were coming in both engines , forcing the pilot to an emergency water landing on the Hudson River, off the coast of Manhattan.

In the last ten years at least 78 aircraft have been incidents caused by the geese, which caused total damages of $ 2.2 million.

Canada geese in this country are considered as the most dangerous animals for air travel after the vultures and deer.

The recent "gassing" of 400 geese and generated high-profile protests in New York, where the local press spoke of "extermination" and "genocide", while associations defending the rights of animals warned that this could be the beginning of a "widespread slaughter" of geese and even state Sen. Eric Adams orchestrated a vigil Saturday in his memory.

In addition to easily reproduce and represent a danger for air transport, according to authorities, these birds occur almost daily a pound of droppings, which in turn contain a bacteria that can contaminate drinking water supplies.

The dissemination of this document coincides with the news that another hundred geese killed in Oregon ended last month allegedly part of the food menu is offered to the neediest in the state.
