Most animals with which the band disbanded were smuggled birds. Brazilian authorities have dismantled on Wednesday the largest network of wildlife trafficking in the country. During Operation San Francisco, the Federal Police arrested at least 29 people in a network that operates in three states in central and southern Brazil (Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina and Parana) and the Netherlands. Sources from the police force spoke of "true underground zoo" found in some local registered.

According to investigations, the gang sold to other countries Brazilian native animals, mainly birds and other exotic species entering the South American country.

Exorbitant prices

Both coming out of Brazil as they entered were sold at exorbitant prices.

Among those arrested in this operation, which lasted eight months investigations, are public officials who monitor and curb such crimes.

There is also a foreigner who tried to land at the airport in Guarulhos, Sao Paulo, with 64 exotic bird eggs.

All are charged with animal abuse crimes, international trade in species of native and exotic fauna, crew training and influence peddling, among others.

Brazilian authorities have warned that wild animals found in captivity (and those who are in the future) will be taken to specialized centers or returned to their countries of origin.
