Indonesia combat the gangs who trade with protected species

ESPECIES_PROTEGIDAS_INDONESIAIn two years the Indonesian police has practiced more than 20 arrests related to illegal wildlife trade. Indonesia has dealt a severe blow to the gangs who trade in protected species in arresting the first time on the island of Borneo orangutans three traffickers and recover farming trying to sell. The operation, which took place on Monday in the town of Pontianak ...

... Also won the first arrests of traffickers of these great apes for decades throughout the archipelago, said the NGO Society for Wildlife Conservation (WCS).

"This has been a very important event and has gained an astonishing result," the director general of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation in Indonesia, Darori, who like many Indonesians respond to a single name.

"I hope this serves as a warning to others (stealth), because we will not tolerate the illegal trade in protected species in Indonesia," he added.

The rescued orangutans, species from Borneo (Pongo pygmaeus), seems healthy and has about one and a half, told Efe Karmele Llanos, the Spanish head of wildlife rehabilitation center Ketapang, which was sent this issue . "We will stay with him at least three years. First, because evidence in the trial against the traffickers and then because it is small and still can not help himself," said the biologist, responsible for the NGO Indonesia International Animal Rescue ( IAR).

'I am optimistic about its future, but I know we face a long and difficult ", he added. According to experts, it is common for gangs prefer young orangutan sell copies, because they are more docile than adults, although in most cases this means killing the mother previously to snatch the calf.

In the last two years, the Indonesian police has practiced more than twenty arrests related to illegal trade in endangered species, most of pangolins and Sumatran tigers or their parts, but none related to the sale of orangutans. In this regard, the director of WCS in Indonesia, Girlfriend ANDAYANI, stressed that the illegal wildlife trade is a "huge threat" to the country, but can be tackled with "the Government's commitment."

Profauna NGO specialized in animal trafficking, said a report published earlier this year that the "trade in protected species in Indonesia remains high."

The most protected animals are traded on the black market, whether living or sold for parts, are the orangutans, tigers, the bears, pangolins, snakes, rhinos, elephants, sharks and turtles.

Some of them stay in Indonesia, including luxury items collectors and owners of small illegal zoo, but others are illegally exported to nearby countries like Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

"Illegal trade in species is a global problem that is affecting the wildlife around the world. Lawsuits like this are extremely important arrest," he said in a statement Colin Poole, director of WCS's Asia Program. It is estimated that currently fewer than 45,000 examples of Bornean orangutan, which survive only about 7,000 species of Sumatra (Pongo abelii), due to deforestation and Indonesia have wild poachers.
