Cancun conference concludes with a call for greater commitment. The third round of preparatory negotiations for the upcoming Climate Change Conference in Cancun ended in Bonn (western Germany) with a call to the parties involved to adopt a greater commitment towards the summit in Mexico in four months. "We need a greater willingness to make commitments to be achieved in Cancun decisions and clear advances," said the new executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Christiana Figueres of Costa Rica, after five days sessions.

Only then can move forward and get out of Cancun a clear mandate, it can become a new treaty to combat climate change as soon at the next summit to be held in South Africa in 2012, Figueres said.


The message of the Secretary General, at the end of this round school, followed criticism from environmentalist organizations and other NGOs who attended the Bonn meeting, according to which the Mexico summit is doomed to failure if there is no rhythm to Print negotiations.


The Bonn conference opened Monday, with representatives of 178 governments around the world to try to reconcile their positions on the basic points to be discussed in Cancún, from 29 November to 10 December.


The purpose of the meeting in the former German federal capital was to mark, at least, the route to follow in the talks, according to the plan developed by the working group.


Figueres stressed at the opening and the need for reliable, debenture and accounting data, pledges, contributions and progress that governments want to do in the fight against climate change.



The next and final preparatory meeting in view of the Cancun conference will be held from 4 to 9 October in Tianjin, China.
