Oilzapper, a bacterial cocktail developed in India, could be the ideal solution to clean the spill caused by the sinking of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, a local scientist said today. According to Banwari Lal, Indian formula is unique because it eliminates separate the four layers that make up the oil, ie, saturated hydrocarbons, benzene compounds, nitrogen and sulfur, and tar. Oilzapper is a cocktail of four bacteria that do not fight each other, since each feeds on a particular layer, said Lal was quoted Monday by The Times of India.

According to the scientist, other similar cocktails act on one or two content only. Lal, who has the patent for the product developed by Teri company following the first gulf war in the 90s of last century, further states that its formula is 40 percent cheaper than other options. He explained that this is a powder that is dispersed in an oil slick or contaminated soil. After three or four months, the bacteria will have eliminated all the oil.



The Times of India said, for its part, the Oilzapper is used successfully for several years by Indian oil companies to clean up oil spills, and in confirmation, reflects the positive testimony of three farmers whose land was strewed product.



More than 184 million gallons of oil have spilled into the sea after the explosion and sinking of the platform of the British Petroleum in the Gulf of Mexico on 20 April.
