Thanks to generous donations from supporters of WSPA, our disaster management team, as part of the Coalition for Animal Rescue in Haiti (ARCH, for its acronym in English) - has been able to make great advances in operating animal assistance to Haiti. To date, some early July 2010, ARCH Coalition has more than 25,000 treatments to animals affected by the devastating earthquake in the Caribbean country. After the terrible impact of the disaster, our team worked with Haitian government officials, international agencies (such as the Organization of the United Nations)

... And other NGOs to identify the problems most pressing animal welfare in the country, provide treatment to animals and develop a long term plan so that Haiti can be better prepared to deal with possible future disasters.


The video operating

From January to July, the Coalition has ARCH:

Treated sick and injured animals:

* Providing assistance and vaccination of over 25,000 dogs, cats, goats, cows, horses and other animals, through a mobile veterinary clinic.

* Coaching a team of 10 people local veterinarian for treatment and care to animals.

* Creating new databases and protocols to collect more detailed information.



Worked in educational efforts with local professionals and the general public:


* Developing a public awareness campaign to educate Haitians about the issues related to disaster preparedness, pet care and health issues on your pets and their families.

* Carrying out the first census of dogs and cats in the country, which will help establish a basis for evaluating the pet population, the incidence of rabies, laboratory equipment needs and other factors.


Established important relationships with government

* Developing productive relationships with various Haitian groups, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Education and the Organization of the United Nations.

* Being the only group with a memorandum of understanding with the Haitian government, becoming the leading organization in this emergency, from the ministry of agriculture.



Acquiring new equipment and laboratory materials:



* Making veterinary infrastructure repairs as the Haitian National Veterinary Laboratory.

* Buying (the installation will be soon) 24 solar cooling units, which are of vital importance for the storage of vaccines.

There is still much to do, but surely we are now closer to achieving better animal welfare conditions in Haiti.
